Eugène Viollet-le-Duc s’appuie, pour ses restaurations, sur les techniques médiévales de construction du XIIIe siècle, qu’il a minutieusement analysées. C’est cette restauration exemplaire qui vaudra à la Cité de Carcassonne sa première inscription sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco en 1997.
