Le Labrador possède uniquement trois couleur reconnues : le noir, le sable (ou jaune) et le chocolat (ou marron). Une petite tache blanche sur le poitrail est admise. Tout comme le Golden, la palette du Labrador sable va du crème au roux.
Comment obtenir un labrador chocolat ?
Le gène marron ne peut être responsable que s’il est couplé à un autre gène marron. Donc pour qu’un chiot Labrador chocolat puisse naître, les deux gènes chocolat sont nécessaires, un seul ne suffit pas. Cependant, un labrador noir peut porter discrètement un gène brun (Bb) et le transmettre à ses chiots.

La robe peut aller du crème pâle à la couleur terre de sienne brûlée (doré foncé), c’est d’ailleurs la couleur originelle du golden car celui-ci n’est ni blanc ni crème pâle. Les couleurs blanc neige, acajou, noir ou chocolat ne sont pas admises (un Golden « noir » est en fait un retriever à poil plat).
